Most software is work in progress
Like most software, Microsoft Windows is always in a state of constant development - Work in progress if you like. At the time of its release the developers and testers were happy with its feature set and security but over time security holes and other bugs are discovered and reported.
Most software developers update their software after its initial release
Microsoft continually updates its operating system to protect its users and the most convenient way to distribute these updates is via the Internet. Many years ago, you could visit the Microsoft website and manually look for individual updates however users found it difficult to determine which updates were relevant and many users simply didn't bother, so Microsoft built Windows Update.
What does Windows Update do?
Windows Update automatically determines which updates your system requires and delivers them to your PC over the internet to your PC and installs them for you.
Automatic Updates
Microsoft recommends (as do we) that you set up your PC to automatically check for and install updates as they become available. Unfortunately the automatic updates feature doesn't always install all the available updates for you, so occasionally you should visit Windows update and get it to check for updates and if there are any you should install them as soon as possible.
Setting Up Automatic Updates in Windows XP
Open the 'Automatic Updates' applet in the Control Panel...
Select the 'Automatic' option and choose a suitable time for the update check to occur...
Click Apply. Your system will now check and install most updates automatically.
Setting Up Automatic Updates in Windows Vista

Click 'Change Settings'...
Select the 'Install updates Automatically' option and choose a suitable time for the update check to occur...
Click OK. Your system will now check and install most updates automatically.
Using Windows update to check for updates manually
Even if you have Automatic updates enabled you should still check for updates occasionally - say once a month to ensure all the updates are installed.
Checking for updates Manually in Windows XP
In Internet Explorer go to the Tools menu -> Windows Update...
Click the 'Custom' button...
Windows will now check for updates and once its done you should see a screen similar to the following with all the available updates. If there are High Priority updates available these should be the first updates you install. To install them click the 'Review and install updates' link...
Click the 'Install Updates'
Windows will now install the updates...
After the installation has finished you should reboot your computer and then repeat the above steps until there are no updates left. If you have never done this before it may take several hours to fully update your computer and several reboots.
